Tongue-Tie and Lip-Tie

Tongue-Tie and Lip-Tie in Dryden

Tongue-tie and lip-tie are conditions that are present at birth that causes restricted movement of the tongue or lip. This condition is caused by shortened pieces of tissue that attaches the tongue to the floor of your mouth and/or the piece of tissue that attaches your lip to your gums. These pieces of tissue are called frenums.

Babies that have lip-tie, almost always are tongue-tied too.  This condition can make it difficult for babies to feed and swallow and later it can affect speech and tooth position.

There are different levels of severity and in some minor cases, it may not cause any problems. In cases where there are problems, they can be fixed with a simple surgical procedure with a laser.

Dr. Kinizsi uses a laser because there is no bleeding, it is more precise, takes only a few minutes to do, has less risk of infection afterwards and a rapid healing time.

After a frenum has been released, stretching and massaging the area is necessary 3-4 times a day to prevent reattachment.
